Everyone: Hey did you watch that nutrition documentary on Netflix?!?!?!
Me: Nah. I’d rather jam a pen in my eye.
Something I’ve learned after working in the health, fitness & nutrition world for over a decade is that there is no “black and white” answer for what is “good” and what is “bad”.
That’s what we all want, but it just doesn’t exist. Sorry.
We all (myself included) want a clear cut answer of what foods are good for us and what foods are bad for us which makes it easy to get pulled in when we see these huge claims like “eating one egg yolk is the same as smoking 5 cigarettes/day”, especially when it’s said by a doctor.
The world of nutrition science is still too new. We just don’t know everything with 100% certainty yet. It sucks, but it’s true, no matter what you see in magazines or on TV or on the interwebz.
This is why for every research study showing one thing there are 2 more studies showing the exact opposite.
This is also why you’ll hear countless stories of people changing their health by going vegan….but then equal amounts of people that have changed their health going Paleo.
There is no clear cut answer of what works for everyone. Again, I’m sorry, it sucks but it’s true.
Fortunately, there are a few things we DO know for sure that will improve your health:
1. Getting some physical activity everyday
2. Getting outside and getting some sunlight
3. Eating less processed foods
4. Getting plenty of good quality sleep
5. Doing activities to help us destress and relax
6. Not smoking or drinking excessive amounts of alcohol
Those are things we know for sure.
So, while everyone else debates whether eating meat is going to kill us all…I’ll be over here focusing on those 6 points above (and enjoying a steak once in a while because I enjoy it).
