If there’s one thing that I’ve been reminded about during this global situation and having all of the gyms closed is just how accessible fitness truly is.
Personally, I love going to the gym. I love lifting weights and I cannot wait to get back in there.
But after 13 years of working with people I also understand that not everyone feels that way, and that’s O.K. too.
I firmly believe – and research continues to support this – that everyone should have a structured training program focused on getting stronger at least 3 days per week. BUT…
What I’ve been reminded about over the last couple of months is how little you actually need to accomplish that.
I’ve been training in a narrow hallway inside my apartment with nothing but my bodyweight and a pair of TRX straps that cost around $200. And if that’s more than you want to spend, you can get a pair of gymnastics rings for $50 that can serve the same purpose with a little creativity.
(If you missed it, make sure to check out my article on “Home Gym Essentials” for how to put together a home gym for any budget.)
Now, don’t get me wrong, you still need a properly designed training program focused on getting stronger over time. None of this randomly-thrown-together nonsense that only makes you “feel” tired. Remember, feeling “tired” doesn’t always equal an effective workout.
However, if you understand how to design effective training programs you don’t need a lot of fancy equipment or a gym membership anymore (if you don’t want one).
Armed with that and a little self-motivation you can do like I did with a friend yesterday – walk down to a local park with your TRX or gymnastic rings, set them up on a soccer goal post and get to work.
When you understand effective program design you don’t need a lot of time or a lot of equipment (if any equipment at all).
Fitness is truly accessible to anyone, anywhere.
All you need to do is decide that you’re going to do the work, no matter what.
Stay strong and live awesome, my friend.
