After a week away I’m back from the Mayan Riviera and ready to get back to work giving you all the tools you need to become the strongest, healthiest version of you.
Taking a week to unplug and spend time connecting with some of my closest friends was exactly what I needed, and being back in the warmth of Mexico reminded me of my love of travel.
Like I mentioned before I left, even though I try to keep my workouts and nutrition pretty consistent when I’m home, when I go on a trip like this I try to enjoy as much of the food as possible, and simply try to stay as active as possible.

How To Eat On Vacation
I still had a lot of fruit, salads and delicious meats, but this also meant eating a few more desserts, enjoying some pastries and a little more heavier foods than I normally would. Oh, and of course some pina coladas and banana daiquiris at the pool.
Did I feel guilty about this? Did I feel like I had to “make up for it” by working out extra hard?
No, of course not. I follow the same advice I tell our 1-1 online Transformation Coaching clients for how to eat on vacation – enjoy the food, don’t feel guilty about it, and then get right back on track the next day. One day – or even one week – off track isn’t going to make you gain 50 lbs overnight (even though it might feel like it).
My Vacation Workout Plan
For workouts, I knew there was going to be a gym there so I did plan on getting at least a couple workouts in. But nothing overly structured or planned. If I felt like going to the gym, I would. And if not then I’d try to do something else. Maybe a long walk on the beach or playing basketball with the guys.

The first morning I was up before everyone else, so I went for a long walk down the beach and found a nice stretch of soft sand to do some beach sprints, then walked back to the resort. Later that day one of my friends wanted to check out the gym, so we went and got a quick lift in. I ended up going to the gym 4 days, which felt good just to get some blood flowing and put some of those extra calories to good use.
Again, this is what I tell our online coaching clients when they go away. If they want something a little more structured to do, then I’ll give it to them. But I’ll usually tell them to simple stay active while they’re away. If they feel like going to the gym and lifting like I did, then that’s great, but don’t stress about it. Going for a long walk wherever you are, or a bike ride can be great too.
Now that I’m back though, it’s back to my regularly scheduled programming. I’ll start the next phase of my training program today. I’ll also get back to my regular diet of fruits, vegetables, meat/fish/eggs, plant based starches, and healthy fats.

The BluePhoenix Fitness Philosophy
My point is when you’re away, enjoy the environment you’re in. Enjoy some foods you don’t normally eat. Stay active by taking in the sights of the area you’re in. There’s a lot to be said for the lower stress levels while you’re away also.
Then when you’re back, get back on track and back to your regularly scheduled programming.
Life is meant to be enjoyed and what good is eating clean and building a strong, healthy body if you can’t enjoy things once in a while too?
