After 13 years of coaching people I’ve come to realize that there’s one movement pattern people will either “get” right away, or cause them a lot of back pain; the hip hinge.
This is the movement pattern you need if you’re doing any type of deadlift, single leg deadlift, squats or single leg squats.
If done properly it can lead to huge improvements in those lifts, and reduced back pain by strengthening all of the muscles in your posterior chain (the group of muscles that run down your spine, your low back, and into your glutes and hamstrings).
However, if done improperly it can quickly lead to debilitating back pain and potential injury that could leave you out of commission for weeks or even months. Typically when people hurt themselves doing squats or deadlifts it’s because they haven’t taken the time to master this movement pattern. Not because “squats are bad” like some people might say.
So it’s a good idea to take some time and get this right, which may require a lot of practice.
